Black ‘N Blue and The Loyal Order guitarist Brandon Cook was recently interviewed by Pariah Burke for The Hard, Heavy & Hair Show. (which episodes can be viewed at Pariah Rocks). Cook spoke about a number of topics including his views on just about anything music related including Metallica, KISS and Sharon Osbourne. Cook joined Black N’ Blue back in 2013 while current KISS lead guitarist Tommy Thayer was in Black ‘N Blue from 1981 to 1989 and made sporadic guest appearances in 1997, 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2018.
In terms of having to replace someone like guitarist Tommy Thayer in Black ‘N Blue, Cook indicated (as transcribed by Sleaze Roxx): “My natural style is not like Tommy Thayer in Black ‘N Blue but now that I played in Black ‘N Blue, I’ve learned to like morph my playing so that it sounds like Black ‘N Blue you know? I mean, when I first got in there, it sounded like Brandon Cook playing in Black ‘N Blue. Now Black ‘N Blue sounds more like Black N’ Blue after 30 years. You know, just because [inaudible]. I love Tommy Thayer‘s playing. It’s like, now with Tommy Thayer in KISS, he sounds more like Ace [Frehley] than Ace does ’cause you know, he’s a really, really insane player. And he still sounds like Tommy Thayer to me ’cause I know what Tommy Thayer sounds like. I know it very intimately but when I hear him play Ace stuff, it’s like, that’s kind of what Ace wanted to sound like. You know, really clean and professional sounding and stuff like that. But it also has that rock n’ roll swagger ’cause if you take away all the glitz and the glamour, right now, KISS is a bad ass rock n’ roll band. You know, they sound really good.”
