Early 90’s Boston Rock Band Atunga Release 19 Songs On iTunes

January 30, 2011

1990’s Boston rockers Atunga have made 19 of their songs available on iTunes. The songs can be purchased at this iTunes link.

In the summer of 1990, guitarist Scott Phipps and drummer Steve Schuman, formerly of Axis, gave flamboyant singer Gregory Paul Cherone an opportunity to front their hard rock band. With the addition of bass player, Derek Avery, and a revamped determination, the dye was cast. They borrowed a name that belonged to an exotic dancer from Rio de Janiero and called themselves, Atunga.

Their music was noisy, rhythmic, and laden with catchy hooks that soaked into your brain until you became a believer. Unlike the onslaught of mindless heavy rock, Atunga has a coherent repertoire that deals with real emotions and often times a genuine message. The songs are what mattered most. And the band put all their energy into each one of them. A distinctive hard rock sound wailed out of Boston in the early 90’s. Atunga was very much a part of it. If the proof is in the pudding, let their music do the talking. This isn’t just memory lane, but rather a regional taste of American rock and roll history.
