Extreme’s “More Than Words” hits #1 on Billboard 25 years ago
Twenty five years ago, Extreme‘s third single “More Than Words” from their sophomore album Extreme II: Pornograffitti hit #1 on the Billboard chart.
The following message as posted on Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt’s Facebook page about an hour ago:
More Than a Memory
On this day… 25 years ago…
A little diddy I wrote, while sitting out on the porch on a hot summer night, reached #1 on the Billboards charts in the the US. A multitude of charts in countries around the world followed.
That summer night I got off that porch and walked into the house to bang on my partner in crime’s bedroom door. Told him we needed lyrics for this strangely melodic but slightly twisted song the universe had delivered me, he went straight to his pen and paper. And in a matter of minutes… Our little acoustic duet was born.
Did we know it would touch so many people? Did we know it would be a soundtrack to weddings, proms and loss of Virginity? Of course We did. Well, maybe not proms, but definitely loss of virginity.
From the first day we performed this song on stage in a small club, everyone sang along… From that day we knew this song was no longer ours, it was yours. Wasn’t before long we were hearing all of you in arenas singing along.
Thank you to all of you for making it a timeless song. It’s all your doing. It’s YOUR song, always.
To Gary… It’s ironic and fitting that today is #nationalbestfriendsday, because on this day, 25 years ago, 2 best friends reached the top of the charts… Together.
Truly, More Than Words.”
