Interview with Overdrivers members Adrien Desquirez, Sébastien Lorquet and Anthony Clay

INTERVIEW WITH OVERDRIVERS BAND MEMBERS ADRIEN DESQUIREZ, SÉBASTIEN LORQUET AND ANTHONY CLAY
Date: January 9, 2019
Interviewer: Olivier

FRENCH HARD ROCKERS OVERDRIVERS HAVEN’T BEEN AROUND THAT LONG SINCE THEY ONLY STARTED IN 2015 BUT THE GROUP HAS ALREADY RELEASED TWO STELLAR RELEASES WITH ‘ROCKIN’ HELL’ (2016) AND ‘SHE’S ON HER PERIOD’ (2018). THE LATTER RECORD FINISHED AT #3 ON THE SLEAZE ROXX’S TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2018. SLEAZE ROXX CAUGHT UP WITH THREE OF THE FOUR OVERDRIVERS BAND MEMBERS — LEAD VOCALIST AND RHYTHM GUITARIST ADRIEN DESQUIREZ, BASSIST SÉBASTIEN LORQUET AND LEAD GUITARIST ANTHONY CLAY — TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE FRENCH ROCKERS.

Sleaze Roxx: Congratulations on your new album ‘She’s On Her Period.’ I am sure that you have heard the comparisons to AC/DC and Airbourne before. I find that your band’s music sounds a lot like Airbourne with Adrien [Desquirez] sounding a lot like Bon Scott. What are your thoughts in that regard?

Anthony Clay (lead guitarist): Thanks! It’s an honour to be compared to these bands, and it’s better to hear “Hey you sound like AC/DC!” than “Hey you sound like shit!” [laughs]. When we compose, our goal is not to sound like a famous band in particular. We just want to make music that we love, to have fun with people coming to our gigs.

Sleaze Roxx: How and when did the band form?

Sébastien Lorquet (bassist): The band was formed in Northern France in 2015. Adrien [lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist] and Anthony [lead guitarist] began to play together in 2011. They looked for other musicians to play with them and I arrived in 2014. Florian Morgano joined the band in 2015, and we started to play gigs two months after that.

Sleaze Roxx: I understand that you’ve gone through quite a few drummers [over 15 drummers according to the group’s Facebook “Story”] before finding Florian [Morgano]. You must have some funny stories about a few of them that you could share?

Adrien Desquirez (lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist): The funniest story I remember is about a rehearsal. We were talking between us about some song details, when we suddenly heard a noisy snoring behind us. The drummer had fallen asleep during the rehearsal!  Thankfully for us, it wasn’t during a gig!

Sleaze Roxx: [Laughs] What’s the shortest time that one of your drummers stayed in the band?

Anthony Clay (lead guitarist): Hmmm, between 15 and 20 minutes [laughs]!

Sleaze Roxx: [Laughs] What happened there?

Anthony Clay (lead guitarist): Personally, I’m a very bad drummer, but one day, a guy came for an audition, with an expensive drum [set], and showed us an incredible talent — being a worst drummer than me [laughs]. It was so bad that we were ill-at-ease. To this day, we are still shocked by this performance [laughs].

Sleaze Roxx: You’ve got some pretty straightforward song titles such as “The Best Blowjob In History” and “She’s On Her Period.” Are you trying to compete with Steel Panther in that regard?

Sébastien Lorquet (bassist): We just want to speak about good things of life —  friends, sex, girls, booze, parties, etc… People who come to our gigs don’t want political or philosophical speeches. They want to forget the everyday life, and that’s what we try to do.  We tell to the crowd, ‘Forget [it] all, have sex and fun, drink beers…’ To resume, rock your life! And I guess that’s the way Steel Panther want rock n’ roll too.

Sleaze Roxx: Who came up and how did you come up with the idea for the album cover for ‘She’s On Her Period’?

Anthony Clay (lead guitarist): I’m the one responsible [laughs]!  We decided to call the album ‘She’s On Her Period’ because it’s a funny and unexpected title for an album and maybe shocking for some people. Sorry for them! We are really proud of this cover, because it remains classy without vulgarity. If you see vulgarity on this cover, that’s in your head because in fact, if you really look at it, it’s just a hand with some red on it. Not a big deal!

Sleaze Roxx: I like the way you think. What prompted you to sing a song about “King Arthur”?

Adrien Desquirez (lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist): It just came from a joke we read which was like “I’ll bury my Excalibur dick so deep in you, whoever pulls out is King Arthur.” We laughed so hard that we decided to write a song about it!

Sleaze Roxx: What’s the idea behind the band name Overdrivers?

Sébastien Lorquet (bassist): The overdrive is the effect that makes an amp when it’s at ten! And that’s what we are — a band with music that needs to be played really loudly to be perfectly felt! We are like alchemists of the overdrive, always tempting to master it so we are the Overdrivers!

Sleaze Roxx: You guys are affiliated with the Dooweet Agency? How did that come about and what do they do for Overdrivers?

Adrien Desquirez (lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist): When you want to make your band bigger, you need visibility. So we decided to contact the most famous communication agency in France, and that’s how we found Dooweet Agency. Thanks to them, our music is now available all around the world. You can fin our CDs in stores, a lot of musical critics wrote about our album, etc… Dooweet gave us what we need –more visibility.

Sleaze Roxx: What’s the rock scene like in France?

Sébastien Lorquet (bassist): France is not really the country of rock, contrary to Germany, England, Belgium, etc…  That’s sad because a lot of bands deserve more success. However, the public is still fond of the kind of music we play. That’s why medias should be more rock n’ roll!

Sleaze Roxx: Were there any thoughts of singing your songs in the French language?

Adrien Desquirez (lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist): No. There were no thoughts of singing our songs in our native language. We sing songs in English because it’s the language of rock n’ roll! And to be honest, musically speaking, according to us, it really sounds better.

Sleaze Roxx: What are the main differences between the albums ‘Rockin Hell’ and ‘She’s On Her Period’?

Anthony Clay (lead guitarist): We’ve got more experience. The humor is more present. We tried to put more influences like metal. The production is better. It sounds more fat, more Overdrivers! We are proud of these two albums, because they are a good way to discover our world but it’s much better to come at a gig to see us play live.

Sleaze Roxx: What are your plans for 2019?

Adrien Desquirez (lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist): We will try to make Overdrivers bigger and bigger. There will be a lot of gigs, in a lot of places where we’ve never played before. We will try to make the family of fans bigger too. And obviously, we will write the third album.

Sleaze Roxx: Last question for each of you — what are your three favorite albums of all-time and why?

Anthony Clay (lead guitarist): AC/DC’s ‘Powerage’ because AC/DC is my favourite band and Powerage is my favourite album of AC/DC. Angus Young at his best! Woods Of Desolation’s ‘Torn Beyond Reason’ — The album that made me discover one of my favourite music style — black metal. Stortregn’s Evocation Of Light for its guitar melodies.

Sébastien Lorquet (bassist): ‘Periphery III: Select Difficulty’ — my best discover for all time on music. Slipknot’s ‘Iowa’ — the first album I bought when I started listening to metal. Korn’s ‘Untouchables’ for the special atmosphere and heavy riffs that only they know and so well create.

Adrien Desquirez (lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist): Accept’s ‘Balls To The Wall’ — one of my references in heavy music. Metallica’s ‘Black Album’ — no piece to throw from the beginning to the end… Rory Gallagher’s ‘Bullfrog Blues’ because it’s Rory Gallagher.
