You may not have heard of Chicago’s The Black Mollys, but if I said to you that two of the members, namely Randi Scott (drums) and Tory Stoffregen (vocals/lead guitar), are now the resident replacements in Enuff Z’Nuff you might know who I’m talking about. To find out a bit more about who they are and their plans for a forthcoming solo tour, Sleaze Roxx’s Grant W. catches up with drummer Randi Scott to get the lowdown on the trio known as The Black Mollys.
Sleaze Roxx: So tell us more about who The Black Mollys are and how you guys formed?
Randi Scott: The Black Mollys are a rock band from America who love to have a laugh and have fun, both on and off stage. Musically it’s like putting Cheap Trick, The Wildhearts and the Foo Fighters in a blender and serving it over ice as a side to your favorite lager.
This band is Tory Stoffregen’s baby. We met about 7 years ago when I was with Supermint, and became friends immediately. We always stayed in touch, and during the last Enuff Z’Nuff tour, as a three piece in ’07, we were on the phone and just decided to make it happen. I got done with that tour and we put a new Black Mollys together and haven’t looked back!
Sleaze Roxx: Both you and Tory play with Enuff Z’Nuff — are The Black Mollys a project you will keep going alongside Enuff Z’Nuff? After all, Chip Z’Nuff manages to do that and play with Steven Adler.
Randi Scott: We stay very busy with The Black Mollys — more so than Enuff Z’Nuff. But that’s the cool thing — it allows us to do both without incident. We’ve even discussed doing an Adler’s Appetite/Black Mollys tour!
Sleaze Roxx: How excited are you to be playing the Download Festival at Donington, and what are you looking forward to most about it?
Randi Scott: VERY EXCITED! Are you kidding???!!!! We all grew up dreaming about The Monsters of Rock, and how that would be ‘the show of all shows’! And here we are… I think my head is gonna pop off. I can’t wait to play, but I can’t wait to see all of these great bands.
Sleaze Roxx: I hear that you will be playing both on June 12th and 13th. Is there to be an acoustic set on one of those dates?
Randi Scott: The Sunday show is acoustic, and we play right before Ginger of The Wildhearts. I heard he may be joining us for a song!
Sleaze Roxx: Would you say you prefer playing large festivals or do you enjoy the intimacy of a club more?
Randi Scott: I like both a lot. They are so different in every way, aside from playing. With festivals — obviously the people are a little more crazy which makes it fun, and the production side of things is so ‘over the top’ — with clubs things seem more focused. I mean, even the people… they came to see YOU in a club. Plus you get to play so much longer in the club setting.
Sleaze Roxx: The Last time Enuff Z’Nuff toured you chose not to come over and Chad Stewart from Faster Pussycat filled in on the dates. What were your reasons for staying behind?
Randi Scott: It really just boiled down to economics. I help Chip with the business and detail stuff of all these tours, and the money for that tour came in WAY LESS than what was originally presented to us. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love playing with Chip and Donnie Vie — but I have a family to provide for, first and foremost. It was just the right decision to make. It helped the Enuff Z’Nuff company for me to step back, so I called Chad. It was really that simple.
Sleaze Roxx: After your stint with Enuff Z’Nuff, you head out on your own for some Black Molly shows in the UK right?
Randi Scott: Yep! And we can’t wait. We are playing clubs that The Black Mollys have played on the last tour we did. And that makes things exciting too, seeing some familiar faces makes you feel like you’re not too far from home.
Sleaze Roxx: You guys have three albums out now right? Have you enjoyed much success in the USA, as you seem to have been over in the UK a few times?
Randi Scott: Yes — three, and the third being a compilation disc of the first two with a few bonus tracks released on the Trashpit label. It has actually sold very well in the UK. We are very thankful of that, and love coming over to play. This is our third time over in a two year period!
Sleaze Roxx: How would you compare your sound with that of Enuff Z’Nuff?
Randi Scott: The Black Mollys are a fun rock band that play 4 minute catchy songs — kinda like Green Day meets The Beatles. Compared to Enuff Z’Nuff, the sound is a bit heavier, but we still have all the harmonies.
Sleaze Roxx: What is a Black Molly anyway, I’ve never thought about it until now?
Randi Scott: (laughs) Well… it was a speed pill in the’ 60s, and it’s a fish, and…
Sleaze Roxx: If any Sleaze Roxx readers were considering going to one of the gigs, what would you say to persuade them to come along and get them through the door?
Randi Scott: I would say come out and have a pint with us and laugh and HAVE FUN. That’s what rock n roll is all about. We’ll do our best to make you happy! And I bet you’ll talk about it the next morning after you get the silly string and confetti out of your hair!
Sleaze Roxx: Thanks for taking the time to chat, you’ll have to keep me posted on how the tours go and I’ll catch up with you in London.
Randi Scott: Thank you Grant.
