Michael Sweet can’t listen to some of the older Stryper albums such as ‘In God We Trust’

Stryper frontman Michael Sweet was recently interviewed by Andrew Daly for Vinyl Writer Music. Stryper‘s latest studio album Even The Devil Believes finished at #1 on the Sleaze Roxx Readers’ Top 20 Albums of 2020 and #2 on the Sleaze Roxx’s Top Ten Albums of 2020.

In terms of how that album came together, Sweet indicated (with slight edits): “I wrote Even The Devil Believes in two weeks, as I have every album over the past 15 years. Everything seems to come together very quickly these days, and I’m very happy about that. There is no real sitting down at a table and trying to sort out a vision, so to speak. It’s more or less I just start writing, and everything starts flowing out of me, and I continue doing so until it’s all done. Then the guys come out to the house, and I teach them everything, and we rehearse, and then we go on to record. That’s been the process for the last 12 albums. And when I say 12 albums, I’m also including Sweet & Lynch and solo albums as well.”

With respect to Stryper‘s older albums, Sweet stated: “I like some of the old classic albums, but some of those albums I can’t listen to like The Yellow And Black Attack, In God We Trust, and Against The Law. I do, however, listen to Soldiers Under Command and To Hell With The Devil from time to time. Those are my two personal favorite albums, and I think the numbers show that those are most likely in everyone’s personal favorite albums. I think they’ve held up reasonably well, all things considered, but I also believe that our new albums and our new material is far superior. I think if the more recent albums had come out in the 80s, they would have far surpassed the classic albums.”
