In an interview with Writer In Japan back in April 2023, Wylde stated the following about Midnite City‘s upcoming record (with slight edits): “Our new album ‘In At The Deep End’ is out June 23rd and we are all over the moon with how it sounds. I know every band says this, but without any doubt whatsoever, it’s Midnite City’s best album to date. Last year, we parted company with our drummer and brought in our new drummer Ryan Briggs and this injected a whole new lease of life into the band again. Our previous three albums had been recorded, produced and mixed by our old drummer and although those albums all sounded absolutely great, they all kind of had the same sound every time. So this time around, we used a different studio to record and that made a big difference. It was also great to work with a new engineer who we’d never worked with before who had different ideas and a different vision.

Then when it came to the mix, there was only one guy on our radar, Chris Laney. I’ve been a huge fan of Chris’ work for years and years and have wanted to work with him for forever. I knew he’d be 100% perfect for Midnite City. Last year we played a festival in Hamburg, Germany and Chris was there with the Pretty Maids, so I got to chat with him there, then followed up with emails once we got home. Right from the start, Chris got our vision straight away. We wanted a much more keyboard heavy sound, as we’ve often felt like the keyboards on our previous albums were a little buried and we wanted to bring them to the forefront a little more.

Chris absolutely loved the songs, so that helped too, as his enthusiasm was really up throughout the whole process. Every day, he would email and say ‘These songs are sooo good!’ and at the end of it all, he said he was really proud to have been involved with such a great album. He really went above and beyond on this album and gave us the sound we’ve always wanted and there is absolutely no doubt that we will be working with him again in the future.

Once the mix was done, Chris highly recommended Classe Persson for mastering. Classe has worked with the likes of Roxette and The Rasmus, so we trusted Chris’ judgement and used him. We spent a lot of money on this album but the results really do speak for themselves.

In terms of the album itself, it’s definitely a return to our earlier sound. It’s a lot more upbeat and is just a real feel-good happy Hair Metal Pop Rock album from start to finish. There’s also some absolutely massive ballads on there. The whole album has this real positivity running throughout it and the band feels reborn for sure. Everyone really stepped up their game and we’re proud as hell of it!”
