THE BLACK CROWES WARM UP FOR REUNION WITH CLUB GIGS:
March 21, 2005
NEW YORK (Billboard) – The Black Crowes have spent the past week playing surprise club gigs to warm up for their sold-out, seven-show run in New York, which will serve as the official kick-off to the group’s first tour since 2001. The stand begins Tuesday (March 22) at the Hammerstein Ballroom.
Billed as Mr. Crowes Garden, the group kicked things off March 14 in Pittston, Pa., dusting off favorites such as “Sting Me,” “Wiser Time,” “Remedy” and “Under a Mountain” alongside covers of Delaney & Bonnie’s “Comin’ Home” and Crosby, Stills & Nash’s “Pre-Road Downs.”
The next night, in Burlington, Vt., the Crowes were joined by former Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio for “Hard to Handle” and a cover of the Beatles’ “Yer Blues.”
A March 17 show in New Haven, Conn., included such oddities as “P. 25 London” from the 1994 album “Amorica” and “How Much for Your Wings?” from its 1996 follow-up, “Three Snakes & One Charm,” plus a cover of Bob Dylan’s “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry.”
Over the weekend in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and at a jam-drenched show in Northampton, Mass., the Crowes aired out everything from Bob Marley’s “Bend Down Low” and the Band’s “Don’t Do It” to their own “She Talks to Angels,” “Hi-Head Blues,” “Nebekanezer,” “Twice as Hard” and “Bring On, Bring On.”
Crowes principals Chris and Rich Robinson are backed on the tour by guitarist Marc Ford (who exited the band in 1997), bassist Sven Pipien (who did the same in early 2000), drummer Bill Dobrow and keyboardist Eddie Hawyrsch.
