Nikki Sixx states that addiction for him was covering up his rejection as a child

Mötley Crüe and Sixx:A.M. bassist Nikki Sixx continues to be an advocate against drug addiction and recently spoke to Your Morning about his addiction issues.

Sixx states: “Addiction for me was covering up my rejection as a child. I didn’t know how much damage that did until I was older and found rock n roll and I found drugs and then I found success. And I was a, you know, multi-millionaire heroin addict, and when I got off the drugs, I was still abandoned, I was still rejected and still had those feelings. And so I had to work really hard and through the work, it got me to write songs like “Primal Scream” which is about my mom and my dad and learning how to accept things. I think I’ll always be working on myself, and that’s what addiction gave me: the wake-up call to try to become a better person.”

In a prior interview with The Doctors, Sixx advised: “I was a heroin addict for exactly one year. And my heart stopped for 2 minutes and I came back and went home and shot up again and overdosed again. And I woke up the next day and I kind of had a spiritual awakening — that’s the only way I can explain it. I woke up and it was the first time I didn’t want to do drugs,” he says of the moment he decided to turn his life around.”
