Review:
Have you ever noticed that these so called supergroups never equal the sum of their parts? Well, 3 Legged Dogg is the latest band to consist of members with impressive resumes making less then impressive music. I’m beginning to think this whole supergroup fad is a waste of my time, it seems like artists use these albums to make the listener a guinea pig for their experimental yearnings.
What is the experiment this time you may be asking? It appears that former members of Quiet Riot, Dio, and Black Sabbath (among others) have decided to play dress-up and pretend that they are Soundgarden! Now I don’t mind Soundgarden myself, but grunge is as dead as 80s rock these days, and in all honesty how many fans of the aforementioned bands want to hear their idols play stuff like this? My guess is a small handful, which is why 3 Legged Dogg will likely disappear as fast as they arrived – forgotten among the countless failed hard rock experiments.
Maybe I’m being a bit harsh here. Then again, considering the amount of talent everyone involved has, one would hope for songs a lot more memorable then this! I think I am more upset with the direction this album took then the music itself. For instance, there just aren’t enough guitar solos on Frozen Summer. You’d think an album with a guitarist of Carlos Cavazo‘s caliber would be filled from top to bottom with killer solos.
Not everything is gloom and doom however. The is a cool solo hidden in the title track, “Wasted Life” is a hard rocker that hints at what could have been and “Bring The Hammer Down” has a Twisted Sister feel on the chorus. But all of this is too few and far between.
Just like their moniker suggests, Frozen Summer limps along aimlessly. Sorry boys, but I think it is time to put this ‘dogg’ down and end the misery.
