A New Revenge: ‘Enemies & Lovers’
A NEW REVENGE
ENEMIES & LOVERS
Released on March 29, 2019 (Golden Robot Records)
Review:
Sleaze Roxx readers will recall, we caught up with guitarist Keri Kelli, a few weeks ago, where we spoke about his new project A New Revenge, which includes singer Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens (Judas Priest, Iced Earth, Yngwie J. Malmsteen), drummer James Kottak (Kingdom Come, Scorpions) and the bass player on the album is Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy, Whitesnake, Quiet Riot). It appears that at the present time, Sarzo’s involvement post album will be minimal and the band have brought in Phil Soussan (Ozzy, Vince Neil, Billy Idol, Last In Line). The record is titled Enemies & Lovers. It was issued on March 29th, via Golden Robot Records. The label has King’s X, Rose Tattoo, John Sykes, Hookers & Blow and Dizzy Reed on its roster, so it’s committed to releasing rock records.
A New Revenge are comprised of musicians with a history. Call it a project or a super group, if the music isn’t there, it will be forgotten in the era of ‘on to the next.’ A New Revenge are a straight forward rock band. It’s not forced and contrived like one of those put together Frontiers band/records. A New Revenge have a fistful of great songs and I don’t have to tell you that the band has chops or that Ripper can sing. Most importantly, there’s a chemistry that comes through on the album, and it’s the chemistry that really sells the band to me.
I feel that if you gave the CD to a 20 year old kid, a 35 year old soccer mom and a 45 year old rock fan, they’d all find something they loved about Enemies & Lovers, because it’s a good record. I have listened through the album several times, but for me the strongest songs are the first four. “The Distance Between” punches your ears, like a fist to a speedbag. “The Way” has a fantastic groove to it. “Never Let You Go” merges all the best elements of classic and modern hard rock. It’s near perfection. “Glorious” is a power metal and contemporary rock crossover. It has a vibe in the verse that is akin to Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer.” It really needs to be heard to be believed. The chorus on “Glorious,” like many tunes on the album will cycle in and out of your psyche for days, but isn’t that the sign of a great song? In the case of A New Revenge, you get an album’s worth.
