Review:
“Sometimes you eat the pussy, sometimes the pussy eats you.” Such charming lyrics can only mean one thing – that the self-proclaimed ‘Kings of redneck metal’, American Dog, are back again. And they are back in a big way with their heaviest and most focused release to date.

Hard takes 2005’s Scars-N-Bars to the next level. The band is becoming further and further removed from their early alcohol laced lyrics, yet still plays music that should give the ol’ liver a good workout. What I’m finding really impressive about Hard is the guitar work of Steve Theado, who just keeps getting better – this time fleshing out his sound with some acoustic and slide guitar (to go along with the killer riffs).

Picking a favorite song off Hard is as difficult as finding a virgin at the Bunny Ranch, there isn’t a bad song to be found. With that being said, the best of the bunch are “Sometimes You Eat The Pussy”, which lives up to its title, the frenzied “No Pity”, the super-charged “Another Day In Paradise” and the strutting “Hypnotized” and “Spell On Me”. The bass line to “Little Short” is as close as Michael Hannon has come to his Salty Dog days since, well…Salty Dog!

Did I read the credits correctly? Are there…gasp…keyboards on this release? Don’t worry, I didn’t notice them until I went looking for them. Don’t think for a second that American Dog is going soft, because next thing you know one of these tracks with be pounding that thought out of your head.

American Dog has grown up, matured if you will. But don’t let that word scare you off – maturity to American Dog is the difference between pissing your pants and pissing on the toilet seat! Hard is the first serious contender for album of the year.
