Review:
Here I am taking a break at work listening to an album titled Work Sucks, how appropriate is that? Actually work has gone rather well today, but we all know how much of a drag it can be (more often than not). The group that has concocted this ode to work hatred is American Sugar Bitch, a relatively new band featuring Roughhouse‘s Dave Weakley and Sinn‘s Tommy Krash (whom appears on this album but is no longer with the group).

The title track may not be the best song ever recorded, but I can picture myself playing it over and over again. It’s hard to argue with beautiful poetry such as “fucking work it makes me sick, why don’t you suck my dick” and “I work hard all day long, why don’t you suck my schlong”. Shakespeare has nothing on these guys! The censored version is laughable as every line seems to end with one long ‘BLEEP’.

Musically American Sugar Bitch is all over the map (with little in common with Roughhouse‘s Motley Crue fetish), but mostly focus on a brand of power-pop rock. For instance, the opening track “Man” sure reminded me a lot of Ugly Kid Joe‘s “Everything About You”, while “One Life” sounds like it was recorded in the late 80s by a Sunset Strip glitter-punk band. “Go” could damn near feel at home on a Krokus disc and “#4” comes across like a Jani Lane composition. The best track here, “Strange Fruit”, sounds out of place and is a dark moody number (far removed from its original origins) with a seventies rock vibe – like a metal version of The Animals.

Either each band member is taking turns on lead vocals, or Weakley is the best singing impersonator I’ve ever heard – he rarely sounds the same twice. This is a well done album yet too unfocused for my tastes. For those of you that like more variety in their music then I do, Work Sucks may be the rock album you’ve been waiting for. www.americansugarbitch.com.
