Review:
A new year brings a new Big Cock CD. That means another dose of gritty songs with tongue-in-cheek lyrics delivered raw. Nothing new then? But yes, it’s all better!
On their first two albums you never knew what you could expect of the upcoming track, be it an acoustic ballad, a Beach Boys-styled fun-song or one of the above mentioned rockers. On Motherload I think they managed to capture the essence of their sound.
‘Is this thing on?,’ yells vocalist Robert Mason right before an AC/DC-inspired riff kicks off “Get A Load Of Me”, the first definite winner on the record. Once again Mason is on the top of his game, screaming his balls off. “Stamina” reminds me a little of Guns N’Roses, once again paired with AC/DC riffage, while “Breaking My Balls” has traces of Accept in their (what else considering the title) Balls To The Wall prime. “Bump And Grind” even reminds me of Poison, not musically speaking, but because of the feel the song has.
“Road To Ruin” once again makes it clear that AC/DC is the main influence on this record. The opening riff is almost identical to that of “Live Wire”, before the tune really kicks in after about 25 seconds into what is probably the best song on Motherload. To my ears “Slave” is a bit of filler, but Big Cock get back on top with their best yet ballad “Don’t Ask Me To Be Faithful”, which is another highlight. The following three tracks are all good rockers in the same vein as the first half of the disc before “Built For Speed” closes the disc in great style. No wonder the boys chose this one to be the first single as it is the best example of how much they’ve improved since their self-titled album. A perfect sing-a-long ‘crusin’ with the top down’ or furthermore ‘takin’ the top off’ styled song, the harmonies after the guitar-solo make you wish it was already summer and are very 80’s like.
You probably already got the idea, Motherload rocks big time! The production values have much improved, the expected top-notch musicianship and the band concentrating on a certain style makes this by far Big Cock‘s best album yet! The only critical point is the length, clocking in at only 35 minutes, but remember that this is a band with a fast output. Considering their lyrics, it’s probably their deep intention leaving you wanting more!
