Def Leppard: ‘And There Will Be A Next Time… Live In Detroit’ CD/DVD

DEF LEPPARD
AND THERE WILL BE A NEXT TIME… LIVE IN DETROIT
To be released on February 10, 2017 (Eagle Rock Entertainment)

Review:
Well, well, well… Def Leppard will issue their new live concert on February 10, 2017 just in time to launch their summer headlining tour with openers Poison and Tesla. The new live DVD/double CD and Blu-Ray/double CD set titled And There Will Be a Next Time… Live From Detroit was filmed July 15, 2016 at the DTE Energy Music Center in Detroit, Michigan on the band’s last tour. Before we completely unleash our fury on singer Joe Elliott and co. and cry ‘another’ live concert release, Elliott made a point recently to plead his case to the rock media. In the press release he states; “I had this idea that we should film one of the shows from the 2016 tour because apart from the Viva! Hysteria shows, we hadn’t actually had a live performance filmed since 1988.” So there you go.

There has been quite a bit of ‘live’ Def Leppard product as of late. In addition to the Viva! Hysteria DVD/double CD set in 2013, there was also 2011’s Mirror Ball — a double CD set that included a bonus live DVD. As you might have expected, even if you didn’t see Leppard the last two or the subsequent seven or eight tours for that matter, you could probably guess the setlist for And There Will Be a Next Time… Live From Detroit as it includes all the hits. Def Leppard to their credit added three new cuts from their 2015 Def Leppard album. That’s bold in this day and age. The only classic [rock] artists that play three or more new album cuts these days are Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. “Let’s Go” finds Leppard shamelessly plagiarizing themselves, yet it works. It’s followed by “Dangerous” and “Man Enough” respectively. The latter aren’t as ‘good’ as “Let’s Go.” You can almost envision people in the audience heading to the stalls during “Man Enough.”

The footage was shot in HD. It obviously it looks stunning. Excellent stage show and lighting, impressive LED screens — the whole ball of wax. Def Leppard aren’t reinventing the wheel. There’s nothing ‘ground breaking’ on And There Will Be A Next Time… Live From Detroit but it is a fun performance to watch. Def Leppard ‘do their thing’ even if it is predictable and contrived. The bonus content on And There Will Be A Next Time… Live From Detroit features the music videos from the Def Leppard album. In the age of YouTube that’s not necessarily a ‘bonus.’
