Review:
The Dirty Diamonds, hailing from Limerick, Ireland, have released their bluesy rock and roll debut, a four-song EP titled Leaving Town that will have your devil horns in the air and get your ass shaking.

The first track, “Lets Get Loud”, cranks up the speed, slows it down, and then ramps back up — it’s an effective opener that has a KISS influence and feel to it (both in sound and name of the track). “Goin’ Down” is the real energy driver on this EP. With lyrics, “This is rock and roll my friend, not one of your bullshit trends”, it is very straight forward and an effective song to bang your head to or work yourself into a rage (if that’s your thing). “Last Chance For Love” has a unique back and forth sound and features Phil Toft‘s high pitch squeals during the chorus. The closer, “Leaving Town”, is my favorite — a grooving number that has the most rock and roll ‘pop’ sound to it, which I believe fits this band best.

Given the limited sample of a four-song EP it is hard to make comparisons, but I’ll do it anyway and compare them to New York’s Wildstreet. Both bands thrive on catchy hooks and grooving guitar riffs, and when both happen together (like it does on “Leaving Town”) you get something special. This EP may not blow your socks off with one listen, but “Goin’ Down” and “Leaving Town” are both immediately worthy of your sleaze rock playlist. It will be interesting to see how the Dirty Diamonds regroup after announcing the departure of vocalist Toft shortly after the release of Leaving Town — in hindsight, an ironically appropriate name for the EP.
