Erotic Psycho: ‘Sex You Up’

If you’re looking for that old school late ’80s / early ’90s sleaze glam-ish sound, look no further than Spanish sleaze rockers Erotic Psycho. They definitely deliver the sleazy sounds that will likely remind you of early Pretty Boy Floyd amongst others.

There really is not much to dislike with respect to the four faster tracks on Erotic Psycho‘s debut five-song EP Sex You Up. They all seem to have that familiar late ’80s sound, which is a great thing. My one knock with three of the faster songs (“Psycho MF,” “Sex Me Up” and “Abstinence Song”) is that there is no big chorus or anything that makes the songs that memorable although they are all enjoyable to listen to. Those songs are in sharp contrast to “Rockin’ On The Wild Side” which is easily memorable and catchy albeit a bit cliche. I am surprised that the group has not shot a video for this song. The one disappointing track is the ballad “Back To You” which does little for me. In fact, I was thinking when will this song end while listening to it! Erotic Psycho‘s lead vocalist Nando Saints just does not have the vocal chops with his raunchy voice to carry the song.

Overall and aside from the lacklustre ballad “Back To You,” I like what I am hearing from Erotic Psycho and look forward to  listening to what they come up with next.

This is sleaze. Some of this is so much sleaze that you’ll need to take a shower after listening to a few of the tracks on Sex You Up. If you like your rock and roll fun and x-rated, then Erotic Psycho might be just what you’re looking for.

The band definitely takes a page from the late ’80s and early ’90s hard core glam scene and does so unapologetically. Drawing from influences such as Faster Pussycat and Pretty Boy Floyd (intentionally or not there seems to be a nod to Pretty Boy Floyd with their lyrics ‘Four electric boys gonna make some noise’ on their 2014 debut video “Lost Boyz”) while maintaining a step past Floyd’s bubblegum pop element. Lead singer Nando Saints has the same soft tenor essence as Steve “Sex” Summers and Taime Down as well.

Erotic Psycho‘s sound is definitely not streamlined and has at least the edge and some of the intensity which bands like the currently touring Guns N’ Roses have brought back to a badly ailing rock scene in 2016. Sex You Up does manage to dress up what is essentially a pop rock album with x-rated lyrics and zealous sleaze. Even with the token ballad, this is a straight forward hard rock record oozing with catchy boisterous tracks. Lead guitarist Jay Martino seems to have a knack for producing catchy main riffs alongside Frost Moore’s drums bringing them to life with an infectious backbeat support that is perfectly showcased on the title track “Sex Me Up.” “Psycho MF” contains a fast low bass with more dark gutter overtones while “Rockin’ On The Wild Side” has the fundamentals of an arena sing-along anthem.

All in all, Sex You Up sports heavy rocking riffs and rolling double-bass kicks and little in the way of pretension. This five-song EP may be giving us a taste of what’s to come and I look forward to what Erotic Psycho can create in the years ahead.
