Gunsmoke: ‘Down ‘N Dirty’ EP

GUNSMOKE
DOWN ‘N DIRTY EP
To be released on May 5, 2022 (Gunsmoke)

Review:
Stockholm’s Gunsmoke is a real extended family affair with cousins Frederick Christofferson and Joachim Handin on vocals and guitar respectively, brothers Markus and Patrik “Pala” Tell alongside bassist Patrik “PJ” Johansson, and their debut five track EP is hot off the press with much anticipation in their home country.

From the first note of opener “Knock Yourself Out”, the similarity and obvious influence of a certain legendary and often imitated Australian band is completely apparent. It chugs along nicely enough but is ultimately rather unmemorable. Title track “Down ‘n’ Dirty” is beefier and a real sleazy boogie that wouldn’t have been out of place on any post Flick of The Switch AC/DC album, with solid rhythm work and a fine guitar solo. “Ride The Demon”  has vocalist Christofferson continuing his best Brian Johnson impression — and doing it very well too,  alongside more effective twin guitar work from Joachim Handin and Markus Tell.

“Rock ‘n’ Roll Outbreak” is the longest track on here — although none of them really outstay their welcome — but this is clearly the band’s “For Those About To Rock…” style opus and, whilst it of course falls short of that classic, it does have its own merit and is a contender for a lively, crowd pleasing opener at any or perhaps all, of their gigs. Final track “Too Hot To Touch” appears — to these ears at least — to be an obvious choice for a single with its instant chorus and stomping bad boy boogie feel. The EP is cleanly produced — if a little thinly in places, and the band members are tight and efficient with bassist Patrik “PJ” Johansson’s consistency deserving a special mention, as well as Christofferson’s aforementioned, perfectly suited vocal impressions.

There is absolutely nothing to dislike here, particularly if you are a fan of post Bon Scott-era albums, but if however you are growing weary of the many pale imitations that often briefly spring up these days, then you may want to give this one a miss, despite its many good points. Or check out Stripwired’s brilliant Another Shot album to see how good an imitator really can sound.
