Review:
Sonic X is the latest up-and-coming Canadian band that has managed to impress me with an almost flawless release. The band’s music is firmly entrenched in the late 80s/early 90s hard rock genre – and I’m not talking about bubblegum glam here, I’m talking about sleazy melodic metal like that of Skid Row and Sweet F.A.
Things get off on the right foot with the acoustic intro of “News For You” that quickly explodes into a convincing rocker, and it isn’t long until you realize Adam Troy has a great voice (a touch of grit and a touch of melody all rolled into one). But the remaining members aren’t content with letting the vocals steal the show as they lay down incredible beats and flashy solos every chance they get. “City Of Sin” sounds like Sweet F.A. meets Dokken and “Lonely Heart” is a great rock number with big vocal harmonies. I’m not a big fan of ballads, but “Seasons Change” is very well done – slowly building itself up towards the infectious chorus.
As far as I’m concerned the best song here is “Two Sides To Every Story”. Like a snake charmer mesmerizing his audience, the song shuffles along as the vocals scream over top some incredible solos. Once again I am hard pressed to find a song that lets me down and I can’t think of any 80s rock fan that would be disappointed with Sonic X. These guys are working on their follow-up album and one can only hope it is as great as this debut. Samples of every song can be found at www.thesonicx.com – highly recommended.
