Spirits of Fire: ‘Spirits of Fire’
SPIRITS OF FIRE
SPIRITS OF FIRE
To be released February 22, 2019 (Frontiers Music Srl)
Review:
Add another “supergroup” to the mix. Spirits of Fire feature singer Tim “Ripper” Owens (ex-Judas Priest, Iced Earth), guitarist Chris Caffery (Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra), bassist Steve DiGiorgio (Testament, Death) and drummer Mark Zonder (ex-Fates Warning, Warlord). As supergroups go, it’s not The Dead Daisies, Chickenfoot or Hollywood Vampires, but this team seems to have come up with just the right chemistry to fit the genre.
Opening track “Light Speed Marching” is a pulsating double-bass powerhouse, with an intro and guitar line that could have been easily written by Ripper‘s former Judas Priest bandmates K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton. “Temple Of The Soul” follows the same pattern, and Ripper’s vocals are pretty damn good. I love the power on “All Comes Together.” I associate it with Priest’s pre-Ripper Painkiller or Ripper‘s Priest debut Jugulator. In fact, many songs on this album seem to reflect the ’90s and Ripper era of Priest. Other tracks, such as “Meet Your End” or “Never To Return” have a studded leather 1982 throwback feel, which is cool and performed well. With that in mind, I think the point is made. There is really no reason any more for me to discuss each song specifically.
Any fan of heavy, well performed power metal featuring seasoned and talented musicians will appreciate Spirits of Fire, without a doubt. Perhaps based on Ripper Owens’ history, or even the combination of Testament, Fates Warning, etc., this album sounds very much like ’90s era Judas Priest — heavy on guitars, impressive vocal ranges and quality performances. Think Priest, Anvil, Metal Church, Iced Earth, Accept, etc. and you get the idea. Whether you feel this is derivative or complimentary is up to you to decide.
