Review:
Good things come to those who wait — after several problems with the post office; Switchblade‘s demo finally arrived on my desk from Denmark. What we have here is unrelenting no-frills hard rock, musically a cross between The Four Horsemen and Junkyard. Vocally Ken Anthony seems to have blended together Dirty Looks and Motorhead, and one has to wonder how many years of heavy drinking would it take to achieve that! Switchblade is raw in both their approach and image — which includes an abundance of tattoos and goatees with their bike gang looks.
For a band that looks like they could be smashing heads with pool-cues at the local pub, I suppose it makes sense that they play a brand of barroom boogie. Every song is based around a catchy riff and fattened up with an uncompromising rhythm section. “Back Up” has incredible beats laced with a killer lead guitar that will have your fist pumping in the air in no time. “Hate U” with its chorus of “I just hate u, you’re a goddamn whore” is more of the same. “Switchblade Serenade” is my favorite tune on this demo, guitarist Thomas Lock grabs you by the throat from the opening chords and doesn’t let go. The only song that doesn’t seem to fit here is “Fade”, but not because the song is bad — it has the dreamy vibe of Skyscraper era David Lee Roth, which is great but just seems out of place among the other attitude driven numbers.
Switchblade is currently looking for a recording/license deal, and whoever decides to sign these boys will have a gem on their roster. More information will soon be available at switchblade.dk.
