How tough is is for a performer to have his /her songs appreciated as a solo artist after experiencing multi-platinum success with a late ’80s / early ’90s era hair metal band. Just ask Vince Neil whose live repertoire to this day mainly or exclusively consists of Mötley Crüe songs.

Former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach was recently interviewed by The Metal Command radio show and spoke about the difficulty in playing his post-Skid Row solo material over the actual Skid Row classics in concert.
Bach stated (and as transcribed by Blabbermouth with slight edits): “It is very hard to compete with those [early Skid Row] records, ’cause everybody grew up with them,” the singer explained. “So you’re actually competing with more than just those records; you’re competing with people’s memories of their lives and what they were doing when they had the first Skid Row record. And that’s a challenge to compete with, because people hold on to their memories with such passion that they can never imagine that something could be better than that. But if you really try hard, and you really go for it, the cream does rise to the top. And I can give you just one very real example of that, and that’s the song ‘American Metalhead’, which is off [Bach‘s 2007 solo album] ‘Angel Down’. When we do that song, it kicks ass just as hard as ‘Monkey Business’. Every show we do it at, that tune stands up to the other huge hit songs. Even though it’s not a hit song, it is a hit song in our live show. So there’s one tune that we always do pretty much every show, ’cause the crowd loves it. And I don’t know whether it’s ’cause of the heavy beat of it or because they’re into being an ‘American metalhead,’ but that tune is a song that stands up to the other ones.”
“American Metalhead” appeared on Bach‘s Angel Down solo album, which reached the #1 spot on the Sleaze Roxx Readers’ Top 20 Albums of 2007 to which Sleaze Roxx stated: “Appearing on over 30% of all the entries, former Skid Row screamer Sebastian Bach returned with an album that was the best release of 2007 according to Sleaze Roxx readers. Angel Downwas Sebastian at his heaviest and fared much better in this poll than Skid Row did last year.”
