Shock To Release ‘Once Denied” On May 4th
April 23, 2013
Canadian metal band Shock will be releasing their debut CD, titled ‘Once Denied’, on May 4th, 2013. The band, with a history dating back over 25 years, are excited to finally be able to release their material. The CD is available for streaming and pre-ordering from their website www.shockmetal.ca.
In a recent interview with Sleaze Roxx, bassist Steve Monette stated, “When we first started kicking around the idea of an album and the name for an album one of the ideas we kicked around was ‘Previously Unreleased’. We were going to call the album ‘Previously Unreleased’ because every greatest hits album always has a line on it that says ‘includes previously unreleased tracks’. In our minds, all of our songs were previously unreleased so we were going to call it a greatest hits album but all the songs were previously unreleased. We have so many songs that we love and enjoy playing that we want to play again that writing new material — I think the time will come when we get there, but right now, we’re still mining the gold from back in the day.”
“I was really hyped on trying to write new songs but then they kind of convinced me,” continued frontman Tony V. “We do have a big song catalogue and I think we’re kind of doing something different — songs that are written 20 to 25 years ago and laying dormant like this and then we decide to revamp them, and that’s basically what we were going to do. I think now instead of writing new songs, I just find it a challenge to improve on some of them without overdoing it — improve on maybe the lyrics, vocal phrasing, dynamics — stuff that you don’t really think of other than when you’re a musician.”
Debuting in 1985, Shock received rave reviews for a series of demo recordings which were circulated among metal connoisseurs worldwide. Shock’s live performances throughout Eastern Canada, as a headliner and opener for metal titans such as Megadeth, Motorhead, Anthrax and Metal Church, established the band’s reputation as one of Canada’s most original offerings to the period metal scene. Frustration at being unable to secure a suitable recording contract led to the band’s breakup in 1990.
After a period of reflection and experience with other musical projects, Tony V, John Tennant, Steve Monette, and new drummer Chad Walls have reintroduced Shock to the metal community with the band’s strongest line-up. Shock’s distinctive melodic power metal has been energized by a phenomenal rhythm unit, which was clear for all to see and hear when Shock opened for Helix at a sold-out concert in Ottawa in March 2012. The band spent the balance of the year in Pebble Studios, recording 8 of its classic songs such as “I’m Dangerous”, “Paths Of Glory”, and “Fighting Chance”. With the May 4th release of ‘Once Denied”, the band is excited to finally make these songs available to its loyal legion of followers, with a production quality worthy of the material.
Early previews of the recording have elicited positive comments from such metal luminaries as Joey Vera (Armored Saint/Fates Warning), Dan Beehler (Exciter), and Canadian journalist Martin Popoff (Iron Maiden and Rush documentaries, etc).
