‘The Decline Of Western Civilization’ Films Get Deluxe Box Set Treatment
March 25, 2015
For the first time ever, all three ‘The Decline Of Western Civilization’ films will be available in one deluxe DVD/Blu-ray box set. And while all three films have been restored in high definition, they are in keeping with the feel of the rebellious times in which they were shot.
On June 30th Shout! Factory will release a four disc collection that contains 1981’s ‘The Decline Of Western Civilization’, which followed the Los Angeles punk music scene, 1988’s infamous ‘The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years’ and 1998’s ‘The Decline of Western Civilization III’, which focused on the gutter punk lifestyle of homeless teenagers. Including commentary by Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl, the box set features never-before-seen original footage, performances and interviews, theatrical trailers, 40-page booklet featuring rare stills and text by Domenic Priore and two interviews with Penelope Spheeris, conducted by Tawn Mastrey and Mark Toscano.
Penelope Spheeris’ ‘The Decline Of Western Civilization’ was perceived as shocking and outrageous at the time of its original release in 1981, and its two follow-up films were no less extraordinary and revealing. Today, museums and educational institutions around the world present them as a historically significant works of art. Featuring some of the most influential and innovative musicians and groups of all time — Germs, Black Flag, X, Fear, Circle Jerks, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, KISS, Motorhead and Ozzy Osbourne — these riveting, unflinching and hard-core films adeptly captured the spirit of a major cultural phenomenon.
“I am so grateful to the fans of these films, and the bands that appeared in them, for their loyalty and patience,” Spheeris, whose directorial credits also include Wayne’s World and Black Sheep, said in a statement. “This is my life’s work, and I like to think that when I go to my grave, The Decline is what I’ll be remembered for.”
