JOURNEY (US)
The arguably most legendary AOR-band of them all got an overwhelming response in 2006, when they returned to Sweden for the first time in almost two decades – at SRF, if you didn’t know. Since then a lot has happened with the band: they have changed singers twice, and released their 13th studio album “Revelation” in 2008. The album got a phenomenal reception, and the same goes for new singer Arnel Pineda from the Philippines, whose similarity to classic Journey vocalist Steve Perry has already made him a new audience favorite. So it is a decidedly revitalized Journey that returns to SRF after three years – whether you were there the last time or not, you have equally good reason not to miss them this time around.
UFO (UK)
UFO, 40 years old this year, played at SRF 2004 and impressed with an energy comparable to that of a much younger band. In their 70s-heyday, with legendary German guitarist Michael Schenker, UFO created a multitude of songs and albums that helped shaping melodic hard rock as we know it, particularly the double-live “Strangers in the Night” (1978). During the 80s and 90s the band were all but forgotten, but for a good decade now they have re-established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. At SRF 2009, UFO will consist of classic members Phil Mogg (vocals), Andy Parker (drums) and Paul Raymond (guitar/keyboards), guitarist Vinnie Moore and deputizing bassist Rob DeLuca – the legendary Pete Way being indisposed to medicate his liver… And this spring, UFO will release their 20th studio album “The Visitor”, so make sure you buy it and learn the songs before the gig!
TYKETTO (US)
This melodic cult-band was formed by exceptional former Waysted-singer Danny Vaughn and released “Don’t Come Easy” in 1991: a debut sporting classics like “Forever Young” and “Wings”. Then came the alternative-wave, and two less successful albums later (the latter one featuring future Journey vocalist Steve Augeri) Tyketto called it a day. Since 2004 they have reunited for nostalgia-performances on several occasions, and last year’s Firefest-apperance re-ignited the band so much that they’re now going for a “real” reunion. The Tyketto that will now make their highly anticipated Swedish debut at SRF consists of three original members plus new guitarist PJ Zitarosa – a dream team for any fan of melodic hard rock.
TANK (UK)
Tank’s punkishly fast, Motorhead-inspired metal made them a valued addition to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal when they debuted with “Filth Hounds of Hades” in 1982. Subsequent releases also became classics, but the late 80s saw Tank’s star waning along with most of their contemporaries’. Roughly a decade later the band were back in business, albeit sporadically due to singer, bassist and band leader Algy Ward’s lack of enthusiasm. In December 2008 his departure was announced, along with the statement of a new Tank being born, fronted by none other than Doogie White (Rainbow, Cornerstone, Yngwie Malmsteen). Now the band is shifting to overdrive, this, their first visit to Sweden Rock, being a prime example.
